Bangladesh Mathematics Foundation
In 1990s, a group of DU and BUET students has formed a mathematical circle under the leadership of Muhammad Shamim & Prof. Dr. Firozzaman (now in USA). From the inspiration on works of BUET Professor Abdul Jabber, one of the top ranked mathematicians of Bangladesh, the then newly formed mathematical circle moved. At first the mathematical circle discussed about pure and applied mathematics, general and applied sciences, and philosophy. The works of Euclid, Al Khawarizmi, Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein, Ibn Sina, Bertrand Russell, Stephen William Hawking are the core motivational source to form this type of science-minded circle. Most of the discussions of the mathematical circle are done in the Modhur Canteen of DU, the Lecture Theater of DU, and the Campus of BUET.
In the whole 1990s, the mathematical circle collected a huge amount of math and science books, science magazines, and biographies of reputed local and global mathematicians and scientists. From the very beginning, the circle has an aim to expand its readers’ society.
In 2004, the mathematical circle has formed an organization named Bangladesh Mathematics Foundation (BMF) in Katabon Dhal of Dhaka, beside Dhaka University (DU). Meanwhile, hundreds of members of BMF started reading circle’s activities like Weekly Math Fun Class, Writing Scripts for Little Magazines, Math Projects, Math Research, Math Festivals, Math Publications etc.
In 2007, Bangladesh Mathematics Foundation (BMF) has achieved the government approval from the Ministry of Social Welfare. After receiving governmental recognition and donation facilities, BMF has worked for the people and the society all over the country.
At present, the organization is in an ascending speed. It organizes many programs and events. For example, Pi Day Festival at Theoretical Physics Department of Dhaka University, Mathematics Department of Dhaka University; Math Fun Classes in all BMF venues; books fare in Amor Ekushey Grontho Mela, Math Festivals with awards giving ceremonies in various educational institutions. These are published in various national newspapers, magazines and television channels. Meanwhile, BMF has published more than 2000 books and papers on mathematics and sciences.
বাংলাদেশ গণিত ফাউন্ডেশন
নব্বই দশকের শুরুতেই মুহাম্মাদ শামীম ও প্রফেসর ড. ফিরোজ্জামান (এখন যুক্তরাষ্ট্রে) এর নেতৃত্বে ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় ও বুয়েটের এক দল ছাত্র মিলে একটি গণিতচক্র গঠিত হয়। বাংলাদেশের অন্যতম গণিতবিদ বুয়েট প্রফেসর আব্দুল জব্বার স্যারের গাণিতিক কর্মে উদ্বুদ্ধ হয়ে এই গণিতচক্রটি অগ্রসর হতে থাকে। প্রথমদিকে এই গণিতচক্রটি বিশুদ্ধ ও ফলিত গণিত, সাধারণ ও ফলিত বিজ্ঞান এবং দর্শন নিয়ে আলোচনা চালাতে থাকে। ইউক্লিড, আল-খরিজমি, আইজাক নিউটন, আলবার্ট আইনস্টাইন, ইবনে সিনা, বার্ট্রান্ড রাসেল, স্টিফেন উইলিয়াম হকিং এঁদের কর্মই ছিল এ রকম একটি বিজ্ঞান-মনষ্ক চক্র গড়ে উঠার মূল প্রেরণার উৎস। এই গণিতচক্রের অধিকাংশ আলোচনা সম্পন্ন হয় ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের মধুর ক্যান্টিন, লেকচার থিয়েটার এবং বুয়েট ক্যাম্পাসে।
সমগ্র নব্বই দশক জুড়েই এই গণিতচক্রটি বিপুল পরিমাণ গণিত ও বিজ্ঞানের বই, বিজ্ঞান সাময়িকী, সুনামধন্য স্থানীয় ও আন্তর্জাতিক গণিতবিদ ও বিজ্ঞানীর জীবনগ্রন্থ সংগ্রহ করে। শুরু থেকেই এই চক্রের উদ্দেশ্য থাকে পাঠক-সমাজের সম্প্রসারণ।
২০০৪ সালে এই গণিতচক্রটি ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের পাশে কাটাবন ঢালে বাংলাদেশ গণিত ফাউন্ডেশন নামে একটি সংগঠন গড়ে তোলে। ইতোমধ্যে বাগফার কয়েক শত সদস্য শুরু করে দেয় পাঠচক্র কার্যক্রম, সাপ্তাহিত মজার গণিত ক্লাস, লিটিল ম্যাগাজিনের পান্ডুলিপি তৈরী, ম্যাথ প্রজেক্ট, ম্যাথ রিসার্স, গণিত উৎসব, গণিত প্রকাশনা ইত্যাদি।
২০০৭ সালে বাংলাদেশ গণিত ফাউন্ডেশন অর্জন করে বাংলাদেশ সরকারের সমাজকল্যাণ মন্ত্রণালয়ের নিবন্ধন-স্বীকৃতী। সরকারি স্বীকৃতি ও অনুদান সুবিধা প্রাপ্তির পর থেকেই বাগফা দেশব্যাপী জনগন ও সমাজের জন্য কাজ করতে থাকে।
বর্তমানে সংগঠনটি ঊর্ধ্বমুখী গতিতে অগ্রসর হচ্ছে। সংগঠনটি বিভিন্ন প্রোগ্রাম ও ইভেন্টস আয়োজন করছে। যেমন, ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের গণিত বিভাগ ও তাত্তি¡ত পদার্থবিদ্যা বিভাগে পাই দিবস উৎসব আয়োজন, সকল বাগফা ভেন্যুতে মজার গণিত ক্লাস পরিচালনা, অমর একুশে গ্রন্থমেলায় অংশগ্রহণ, বিভিন্ন শিক্ষা প্রতিষ্ঠানে সম্মাননা প্রদান অনুষ্ঠান আয়োজন ইত্যাদি। এই খবরগুলো বিভিন্ন সময়ে বিভিন্ন জাতীয় দৈনিক, সাময়িকী ও টিভি চ্যানেলে প্রকাশিত হয়েছে। এরই মধ্যে বাগফা থেকে ২০০০ এর অধিক গণিত ও বিজ্ঞান বিষয়ক গ্রন্থ ও নিবন্ধ প্রকাশিত হয়েছে।
